Moscow Ballet announces auditions for local student dancers to perform beside the pros in Great Russian Nutcracker!


Moscow Ballet announces open auditions on Sat, Sep 12, 3:00pm for local student dancers, boys and girls, ages 7 to 16 years. Selected children will perform beside the professional company in the Great Russian Nutcracker Sun, Nov 29, 3:00pm at the Alabama Theatre.

The auditions will be at Moscow Ballet local host dance studio Alabama Dance Academy, 3221 Old Columbiana Road. Hoover, AL 35226. Student dancers must have at least one year of ballet training, dress in dance attire and may bring Pointe shoes. Moscow Ballet’s “Dance with Us” program, in its 23rd year, selects student dancers to perform ancillary roles of Party Children, Mice, Snowflakes, Angels, and more. Audition Director Zhanna Golubenko will be in town for several days to lead the audition and to rehearse the selected student dancers. “The true highlight of the night was seeing all the Calgary children who... should be congratulated for their very skilled and enthusiastic participation. Local, award winning Birmingham Girls Choir performs in live performance Nov 29 at Alabama Theatre

The Birmingham Girls Choir was founded in 2001 as a non-profit organization whose goal is to instill a love of singing and provide high quality music experiences to the youth of the greater Birmingham area.  The choir serves the Birmingham community by providing music at sporting events, hospitals, nursing homes and supporting local non-profit fund raisers.  The group has performed with Opera Birmingham and The Alabama Symphony, and, in 2015, had the honor of performing for former First Lady Laura Bush. The choir has won numerous titles regionally and travels annually to perform in both local and regional music festivals.  The Birmingham Girls Choir is lead by a team of five: Margaret Heron, Meredith DeVore, and Lindsay Walker-choir directors; Patricia Diffey- accompanist; Pam Walston-Executive Director.  The choir is excited to be a part of the Moscow Ballet’s performance of the Great Russian Nutcracker at the Alabama Theatre in Birmingham.

altThe Alabama Theatre was built in 1927 by Paramount Studios as an Alabama showcase for Paramount films. It was used primarily as a movie palace for 55 years, with the exception of the annual Miss Alabama pagent and the weekly Mickey Mouse Club.

In 1998, the Alabama underwent a complete restoration. Gold leaf and other paint was cleaned or replaced, seats were replaced or recovered, and some carpet and drapes were replaced.

In 2011 The Alabama Theatre received the Building of the Year Award from the Alabama Architectural Foundation. The award is presented to the one building statewide that best exemplifies how architecture can provide a meaningful impact on the citizens of Alabama in the past, present and future.

The new Alabama Theatre for the Performing Arts hosts many live events, as well as films. Each year the Theatre hosts over 300 events attended by a half million Birmingham area citizens.
