Announcing 24th Annual National Tour of Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker and Swan Lake to cities from New York to Los Angeles and Chicago to Miami

“Virtuosity...fleet authority,” Los Angeles Times

“Special touches… highlight is the Dove of Peace,” Chicago Tribune

Great Russian Nutcracker Waltz of the FlowersAnnouncing Moscow Ballet’s 24th season of the celebrated Great Russian Nutcracker and Swan Lake tour to U.S and Canadian cities from November 8 through December 30, 2016  Direct from Russia, the classic Great Russian Nutcracker will entertain the whole family this Christmas. Experience the exceptional dancing of a company of almost 40, a 60-foot growing Christmas tree, new and spectacular hand-made costumes by Resident Designer Arthur Oliver, and stunning sets hand-painted in Russia and designed by multi-Academy Award nominee Carl Sprague. Moscow Ballet consistently garners critical acclaim for performances in cities from New York to Los Angeles, and Miami to Calgary. The production is known for its dedication to world peace: naming Act II the “Land of Peace and Harmony;” featuring a rose shooting cannon, and a stunning 2-person “Dove of Peace” with a 20’ wingspan. Moscow Ballet also presents Swan Lake in 2016 staged by Ballet Master Vladimir Troschenko, a former partner to legendary Russian ballerinas Nadia Pavlova, Ludmilla Seminyaka, and Galina Mezentseva and an honors graduate of both the Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet academies. Moscow Ballet’s Swan Lake is based on the Ivanov/Lev version with changes by Yuri Grigorovich for the Bolshoi in 1967. The company features almost 40 Vaganova trained dancers that are praised by the critics. “Perhaps one of the most magical moments of all, was delivered by a truly excellent...corps, a veritable highlight excelling in both synchrony and grace. Both male and female corps were outstanding all night.” from Calgary HeraldRegina Herald writes, “Breathtaking...magical touches...a thrilling experience.” Revered as the epitome of classical ballets, Swan Lake is a gripping tale of love, betrayal, and the triumph of good over evil. The dual role of Odette/ Odile in which the ballerina first appears as the tragically ethereal Swan Queen and later as the alluring but deceptive Odile (Black Swan) is one of the most dramatic and technically challenging roles in all of classical ballet.

2015 Season ends on a high note!

The tour, which was in 80+ US and Canadian cities, premiered in Houston and San Francisco to critical acclaim. The Moscow Ballet company, with award winning principal dancers, large corps de ballet and extravagant costumes and sets hand-crafted in Russia, attracts audiences of all ages filling theatres large and small. New in 2015 were 2 set designs by Art Directors' Guild multi-award winner Carl Sprague, who has worked in the art department of more than 30 films, with a combined total of 22 Oscar wins, including Steven Spielberg’s “Amistad” and best production design for Wes Anderson’s "The Grand Budapest Hotel."

As of the end 2015, the Moscow Ballet Dance with Us program has brought more than 96,600 student dancers, ages 7 to 16 years, on stage with the professionals since 1993. Maria Whaley with Ashland Youth Ballet says, “Wow! What a tremendous experience we (Dance with Us students) had!” The Musical Wunderkind program thrived in 28 cities in which pre-professional string musicians and the Moscow Ballet Principal Ballerina performed Saint Saen’s “Dying Swan’ live and New Horizons – A Children’s Program for Life reached out to children in many tour cities creating healthy physical, nutritional and creative habits in children through interactions with the Russian role models.

More special programs in 2015 included...

  • Houston’s Free the Captives and Moscow Ballet partnered to raise $28,000 to help prevent trafficking of local Houston youth at the Great Russian Nutcracker performance.
  • Moscow Ballet soloists performed in El Paso, Edmonton and Bowling Green in honor of International Peace Day. Moscow Ballet has dedicated its tours to peace since 1993 and Act II is named the "Land of Peace and Harmony" (as opposed to traditional "Land of Sweets”).
  • The Kids by Kids Holiday Party at Spokane’s INB Center was created by kids for kids and their families and benefitted Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital. The event’s performances were executed by children including Spokane’s Crescendo Community Chorus and Spokane Ballet Arts Academy and there were photo opportunities with Moscow Ballet ballerinas; 10-foot-tall puppets; and games and activities for all provided by 7 local children’s organizations.
