Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker features Acclaimed Dancers, Stunning Costumes, and Set Designs by Academy Award Nominee – only at the Kings
Called “A Christmas tale from a faraway Land of Snow and Ice” by New York Times Dance Critic BrianSeibert in 2014, Moscow Ballet’s principal dancers and production values raise the ante for the performance experience every year. In 2015 multiple award-winning principal ballerina Ekaterina Bortiakova and principal danseur Akzhol Mussakhanov, hailing from one of the world’s best ballet academies, deliver outstanding performances for audiences of all ages. “Danced exquisitely by veteran dancer Ekaterina Bortiakova...[her]technical prowess, especially in her footwork and turns, coupled with an endearing smile and girlish innocence, was…truly "great,” said Cleveland Plain Dealer’s Steve Sucato, 2014.
New in 2015 are set designs created by Academy Award nominee Carl Sprague. Sprague - whose work can be seen in Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Wes Anderson films to name a few - created Act I Party Scene (pictured above) Grand Salon with wall panels of iconic Russian scenes foreshadowing the story to come. In Act II his new romantic Waltz of the Flowers design creates a deep perspective reminiscent of the gardens of the Grand Palace of Peterhof. Sprague comments, “This was not my first Nutcracker, so I thoroughly enjoyed the different take of the Russian-ness of it, and the demand for authenticity of the setting. I am very pleased with the Russian scene shop’s renderingof my designs.”
Resident Costume Designer Arthur Oliver created new costume designs for Act I in 2015 and just recently returned from St Petersburg where he oversaw the Russian artisans bringing his intricate designs to life. Critics agree on the high quality of Oliver’s work. “The costumes are exquisite…dusted with sparkling jewels and rhinestones...created by Arthur Oliver, they are works of art, tailored to each individual adult cast member’s body,” D.C. Metro Theater and Arts, Wendi Winters, 2014. The “Great Russian Nutcracker is…filled with...Macy’s-sized animals…marvelously precise dancing …beautiful costumes” Sioux City Journal, 2014.
